How to Get Rid of Fungal Acne

What is Fungal Acne?

Fungal acne is also called pityrosporum folliculitis and malassezia folliculitis. It is a type of acne that occurs due to too much yeast within the hair follicles. Yeast is naturally found on most skin surfaces but become problematic in large amounts causing an inflammatory reaction within the hair follicle, often misdiagnosed as acne vulgaris.

Malassezia yeast is found on areas of the skin with many sebaceous glands such as the face, upper back, chest, scalp and buttocks. These areas produce oil which the malassezia yeast uses to grow. Other factors such as hot weather, sweat and constrictive clothing causes Malassezia to grow. Malassezia can also spread to other places on the body.

Best Products For Fungal Acne

Fungal Acne is treated with topical anti fungals. As malassezia can spread from other places on the body onto the face it can be beneficial to treat all oil producing areas such as the upper back, chest, scalp and face with anti fungals at the same time.

Make sure to cover areas such as behind the ears and in the belly button. As yeast is always present on the skin it is likely necessary to continue using anti fungal products even after the infection is gone.

Nizoral A-D Anti-Dandruff Shampoo w. 1% Ketoconazol

Nizoral Anti-Dandruff Shampoo is an anti fungal shampoo used to treat dandruff and fungal infections on the skin. It contains 1% ketoconazole, an anti fungal.

Nizoral can be used as a shampoo, body wash or mask to treat fungal acne caused by an over growth of malassezia yeast. Apply the shampoo and leave on the skin or scalp for 3-5 minutes before rinsing off. Make sure to spot test before you apply it to your face as it can be very drying.

Nizoral also makes an anti fungal cream, useful for fighting fungal infections on the body. However I would stay away from applying it to the face as it contains the pore clogging ingredient Isopropyl Myristate, a chemical compound derived from isopropyl alcohol used to make creams more emollient. >>> Click to Buy on Amazon

San Marcos 10% Sulfur Ointment

Sulfur is a mild anti fungal and antibacterial often used to treat acne. San Marcos Sulfur Ointment contains 10% sulfur and can be used as a mask or spot treatment. Don’t use it as a face cream as it can be very drying.

The ointment is typically left on for 5-10 minutes when used as a face mask. It works by drying out the top layer of the skin causing minor peeling. I have seen people mixing it with tea tree oil to use as a spot treatment. The sulfur ointment from San Marcos doesn't contain Polyethylene Glycol or fragrance as many similar sulfur ointments do.
